| Shatterfield :: Using the Shatterfield Downloader |
Shatterfield's Downloader is designed to handle all of the downloading of the COT Data using the Shatterfield system.
After installation, you can run the Downloader and get the following screen:
Once all of the options have been set, you will only need to click the "Download" button to retrieve the newest data.
From here, click on the Options button. You will get a screen that looks like this:
The first thing that you'll want to do is select the data type that your software will use. Note that if you have several
products that can use Shatterfield COT data, it will download for them all, not just for only one of them.
Here is the information for each of the file formats:
Save downloaded data in native MetaStock format
This sets the MetaStock file format used for programs like MetaStock, TradeStation, AmiBroker, Fibonacci Trader, NeuroShell Trader, etc.
It will place the COT data into the folder C:\MetaStock Data\COT, and the COT Synthetics data into the folder C:\MetaStock Data\COT Synthetics
Save downloaded data in CSV / ASCII text format
This saves the COT data into a Comma Separated Value format for use by software like Excel. Other software can also use this data as a
place to import if they use a CSV format. The CSV / ASCII files are saved by symbol name into the folder: C:\Shatterfield\COT.
The CSV data will begin with a Header field, and then data will follow for every line after that. The header field looks like this:
<TICKER>,<NAME>,<DATE>,<CLOSE>,<VOLUME>,<O/I>
MetaTrader 3.x
(Note: Metatrader 3.x and MetaTrader 4.x settings are not compatible with each other. Set each individually.)
This saves the data into the proper format for use with the Shatterfield COT indicators, as well as for the requirements for MetaTrader 3
operation. It requires that you enter the location of your MetaTrader 3 "Experts" folder. A lookup button is provided to assist you.
If you have a check in the MetaTrader 3.x box, then you can click on the lookup button and get a dialog box like this:
You can click on the plus (+) signs next to folders to expand them.
Click on the + next to My Computer. That will expand your drives. Click on the + next to the "C" drive, and then click on the + next to Program Files.
From this point, you will have to scroll down to find the location of your MetaTrader 3 program. Once you've found it, click on the + and
then select the "experts" folder, as shown here:
In this example, MetaTrader 3 is customized for Interbank FX, and so that is what was selected. You will want to contact your broker to
find the name that your MetaTrader 3 is installed under.
Click on OK and then the folder location for MetaTrader 3.x should be set.
| MetaTrader 4.x |
(Note: Metatrader 3.x and MetaTrader 4.x settings are not compatible with each other. Set each individually.)
This saves the data into the proper format for use with the Shatterfield COT indicators, as well as for the requirements for
MetaTrader 4 operation. It requires that you enter the location of your MetaTrader 4 "Experts" folder. A lookup button is provided to assist you.
If you have a check in the MetaTrader 4.x box, then you can click on the lookup button and get a dialog box like this:
You can click on the plus (+) signs next to folders to expand them.
Click on the + next to My Computer. That will expand your drives. Click on the + next to the "C" drive, and then click
on the + next to Program Files.
From this point, you will have to scroll down to find the location of your MetaTrader 4 program. Once you've found it, click on
the + and then select the "experts" folder, as shown here:
In this example, MetaTrader 4 is customized for Interbank FX, and so that is what was selected. You will want to contact your broker
to find the name that your MetaTrader 4 is installed under.
Click on OK and then the folder location for MetaTrader 4.x should be set.
| Back to the Options Interface |
| Once you've set locations for everything, your Downloader may look something like this: |
From here, enter in your user name and password. (Your username is usually your email address).
| Reset Data |
The last option is the "Reset Data" button. This is only used if there was a problem with a download, or if the Downloader says that your
data is up to date when you know that it's not. Pressing the Reset Data button will reset your download status. Then, the next time you download,
it will re-download the entire history of data and rebuild your data. This will NOT affect your existing programs. All of your settings, systems,
indicators, etc. will be unaffected when using this option and should work as normal after a re-download is complete.
When this is done, click on "Save" and then you're ready to download.
| Downloading |
Downloading can take some time (several minutes) depending on your settings. New downloads, as well as reset data downloads, have a lot of work
to do. Updating existing data is usually much faster. Just give the Downloader a chance to do its job.
